In Stunning Move Cubs Part Ways With Veteran Reliever Hector Neris

Chicago Cubs Designate Reliever Héctor Neris for Assignment, Promote Jack Neely

Neris Released After Struggles in 2023

The Chicago Cubs have released veteran reliever Héctor Neris, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.

Neris, 35, struggled in 2023, posting a 6.88 ERA in 63 appearances. He allowed 12 home runs in just 51.1 innings pitched.

The Cubs designated Neris for assignment to make room for right-hander Jack Neely, who has been promoted from Triple-A Iowa.

Neely Promoted After Strong Minor League Season

Neely, 26, has been one of the Cubs' most impressive relievers in the minor leagues this season.

In 41 appearances at Iowa, Neely has a 2.84 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 69 strikeouts in 60 innings.

Neely will join a Cubs bullpen that has been struggling this season, with a collective 5.02 ERA that ranks 26th in the majors.
